Richard Lohmayer
He comes from the bottom of the barrel. Having grown up in an orphanage after his parents got separated, he should have normally become a sympathizer of refugees and have more understanding for their problems and needs.
Because of his background, Richie is under the constant pressure of getting recognition and does not want any refugee getting in the way of him achieving his goals. He feels good and powerful when he can look down upon them. It gives him the feeling of not being superior, not to be vile, like them.
His fresh marriage to Clara Lohmayer, who is a social worker, enabled Richie to lead a normal life, off the streets and away from the ghetto-language and into the bureaucratic system.
But still a wild rage lingers underneath Richie’s surface, rage that has been collecting and building up for some time, and is now waiting to be unleashed.
Dr. Omid Afarid
Omid, 45 years of age and a caring family father, loved his job as a doctor in a Teheran hospital. Seeing his main responsibility, as head of the family, in keeping the traditional hierarchies upright, it is “his” main priority to be able to provide an income for his family.
The work offered to him in Germany is way beneath his qualification and lets his self-confidence suffer. Here in Germany he needs to start over from scratch again. He could easily give up and resign, but this would not match him, because Omid lives by the Persian saying of: „Doe the small things now and greater things will come to you and will ask to be done.“ He takes on the challenge with unswerving faith that he will be able to work as a doctor, here in Germany someday.
He is stuck in a constant battle between responsibility and vocation. Being the loving father on one side, but longing for self-fulfilment in his job, as the talented doctor that he is. Omid is an open minded and good humoured person who lives by the philosophy of having to take life into one’s own hands.
